MDickie Wrestling MPire 2008 Career Edition 1.9
There’s another tiny version update that extends across Reach and the Wrestling MPire series. While I was reworking the contract negotiations for Popscene, I realized that the contract length had less of an impact than I intended. Unless the booker had a particularly bad “attitude” it barely mattered, but now all payments decrease substantially with shorter contracts and increase with longer ones. Upgrade to make negotiations just that little bit more sophisticated. Editors may also be interested to know that racial masks now apply to the hip area, which was previously exempt for fear of ruining shorts. There’s no conflict now though, so you’ve got that little bit more freedom to make thongs and such. As I said, all of these modifications are universal across the past 3 games so just head to any game’s page for the latest trial or boxed game patch…..

Super Cosplay War Ultra is arguably the best one I’ve played. Essentially it is a a juiced up version of Pocket Fighter with a more advanced fighting engine (air dash!) where the characters are cosplayers or parodies of cosplayer stereotypes with moves where they’ll transform into their favourite characters (bad costumes included). There are references galore to both games and anime everywhere both in the characters as well as the backgrounds. The endboss is also particularly hilarious with both jabs at cosplay and a parody/homage of “SNK boss syndrome”. The game is very polished with 3D particle effects and tight controls. Amazingly it’s free. If only because it’d be kind of hard to sell it uh… anywhere.

With plenty of attacks for each fighter, excellent animation, and a good play balance, Destruction Desire plays like a well-coded “lite” version of Guilty Gear X.

Fatal Fake is another doujin fighting game featuring characters from TYPE-MOON’s popular visual novel. This version is graphically superior than the rest of it’s cousins, partly due to the use of cel-shading process to render the fighters. The camera view changes and rotates automatically so that the player can get the best view of the action unfolding on screen. There doesn’t seem to be a playing manual or list of moves to be found anywhere, although arcade veterans should be able to figure them out after a few practice sessions.
